Yekaterinburg is a large city with over 1 million people. It was founded in 1723 and was named after Peter the Great's wife, Catherine I. Though this city is a thriving, industrial city, it's most notoriously known for being the sight of the end of the Romanovs. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the last tsar of Russia, Nicolai II, was arrested and taken to Ekaterinburg. There, the Bolsheviks assassinated him and his family a year later, for fear of his release and return to power. The Bolsheviks tried to hide his remains and the Ipatiev house, where he lived, was destroyed. When Boris Yeltsin came to power in 1991, he retrieved the remains and led the first investigation to discover that it was, in fact, the remains of the tsar and his family. The Cathedral On The Blood was built where the Ipatiev house once remained in 2003.
